Gabriel’s Oboe#
About the music#
Gabriel’s Oboe is the main theme for the 1986 classic The Mission. Written by Ennio Morricone, it’s initially performed in the film by missionary Father Gabriel on his oboe (hence the name) as he witnesses to the Guaraní indians of southern Brazil.
Stuart Hine translated and expanded on the Swedish hymn O Store Gud to produce and publish the famous hymn How Great Thou Art (1949), while working with Polish refugees in Somerset after the second world war.
In 2014 The Piano Guys released their own arrangement of both pieces, heavily featuring the Iguazú falls, a prominent landmark in The Mission.
While at university I adapted this arrangement to be performed on the violin, and recorded it during my final year. Upon visitng Brazil (and Iguazú) I knew I needed to do a music video. This video was recorded while I was in Brazil, and features some of my own footage from my trip to the falls. Due to difficulties aligning our schedules for filming I’ve put myself playing the piano part in the video, however it was my friend Toby Baker who recorded the piano part in the studio.
